Month by Month: May

I thought I maybe try and post our "goals" for the month as a new feature. And also let you know how the previous month went.
April was our first month to try the envelope system. I've gotta say, I really liked it, thought it was kinda liberating. We got buy with $200 for groceries without much of a problem. Eating out was a little more tricky, but fortunately we found a little wiggle room.

Reading
Tommy and I decided to each pick three books to read this summer. I know many of you read three books a week, and hopefully we'll read more than that, but I thought three was a reasonable place to start. I'm not sure what his three are, but mine are:
Shepherding a Child's Heart
Love Your God with all Your Mind

Where's Mom
Because I'm half way through with one of these, and one is less than 50 pages, I've decided to read the Twilight Series as well, 2560 pages according to Amazon.

Financial
Holidays, birthdays and special occasions are always tricky on the pocket book. Especially when you live away from family. We have to either find extra money for gas to drive down, or for postage to ship something. This month my sister-in-law is getting married, so we will be down twice, once for the shower and once for the wedding. Fortunately school will be finished so Tommy will be working more and I won't be driving 150 miles to and from school a week; I suppose it will all come out in the wash. We might have to impose a "no eating on the road" rule to help things out!

What are you reading? What do you do for family that lives out of town? Or family that lives in town?

And for those of you only interested in the baby:

He liked my chocolate popsicle

His first tooth. He's modest about it, doesn't want to show it off.

  1. We read Love Your God With All Your Mind for book club a few months ago. It was interesting, and I've heard great things about Shepherding a Child's Heart.
Meanwhile, we've definitely cut back on gifts and trips home. We also have ventured into the realm of homemade gifts (a few yikes moments), and we try to buy throughout the year and look for good deals.
I still don't see how you do it on the groceries, though. ;)

  2. one of the best ways I've found to make groceries go further is to make meat a part of the meal, not the meal itself. One chicken breast can feed both of us if it's cut up smaller. Two can be put into a casserole or stir fry and give us a few meals. I recently found 5dollardinners.com She has some great ideas for making food go further.
And I love me some Manager's Special meats at Kroger.
