Under Control?

First off, I finally typed up my birth story and can e-mail it to anyone interested. It’s about two pages long, or I’d post it here. If I get around to writing a short version, expect to see it here.

I’ve been thinking a lot about babies, specifically how to proceed with number two. No, we have no plans of any kind right now and I am totally not pregnant! I am really seeking God’s will regarding birth control, family planning and things of that nature. In my quest I’ve come across some interesting articles and thought I’d pass them along. It’s a pretty heated topic, and I’d be interested in what you have to say.

A Hard Pill to Swallow- the article that originally influenced my birth control choices about three years ago.

A Funny Song- because you can’t ever take yourself too seriously.

John Piper had some interesting thoughts regarding pre-fall and post-fall directives.

Making Home- An excellent blog that is becoming one of my new favorites -This is a discussion of how birth control has affected the culture we live in.

Tommy and I LOVE being parents and believe God when he says children are a blessing. I think this culture teaches us that children are a burden, are expensive and are an inconvenience. How heartbreaking.

  1. After talking to you about this and reading some of the links you posted, I'm seriously going to be seeking God's advice on this one. Marc and I have been trying to decipher the Lord's Will in our lives regarding children and I admit that we are letting other factors,i.e. money, timing, peoples opinions, get in the way of what should be between me, Marc and God.

Good post Jess. Would love to discuss this more.

  2. If I can contribute to the discussion, I think that an earlier post that I wrote is helpful: http://magnifygod.wordpress.com/2007/10/10/workaholic-dads-and-the-sovereign-lord/

I think that the issue of birth control is relevant as you meditate on the psalm.

  3. What an interesting post! Glad to hear your perspective on this. We, too, are seeking God's guidance on having children. I've read a lot of articles about various types of birth control, and I think I've done my homework. :) It's always good to get more information, though.
But one of the big issues we've had is questioning if we can truly afford children before bringing them here. It takes just about everything my husband and I earn right now to pay our expenses and get through seminary. If we had a child (at our current financial status), there is no way one of us would be able to stay home full-time, which is something that we (and many here at seminary) think is an incredibly important thing to do. So, do we be sure to get our "quiver full" only to leave them in day care? Not judging either way--just asking. :)
It is a tough call, and, again, I'm glad you're approaching it seeking God's guidance and sharing the information you find!

  4. Thanks for the links!! I've read the Making Home one (where I found your blog, in fact!), but I'm always intersted in reading more. This is the first time in my life that I'm praying for God to give me a peace about if we DO get pregnant, as in the past I've always begged him for it (lots of time trying and several miscarriages). It's a very strange place to be, especially considering in the past 5 years I've been very convicted about birth control- hormonal, anyway (not using it).

Congrats on your little one, by the way!
